Labor Day in Aspen Brings Live Music, Mountain Adventures and the First Signs of Fall

This year, the long weekend also brings some big names to the mountains. The 2026 JAS Labor Day Experience returns to Snowmass Town Park September 4–6 for three days of outdoor concerts, with the Elk Mountains rising behind the stage.

Benson Boone headlines Friday night, followed by Tim McGraw on Saturday and The Red Clay Strays on Sunday. The lineup also includes Bonnie Raitt, Shaboozey, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, Avery Anna and Christone “Kingfish” Ingram.

The concerts make a good reason to plan a long weekend in Aspen, but there’s plenty worth sticking around for once the music stops.

Catch the Beginning of Fall on the Trails

Aspen’s famous fall color typically arrives later in September, but Labor Day offers the chance to catch the beginning of the seasonal change while many of the area’s summer adventures are still accessible.

For an easy introduction, Smuggler Mountain is a local favorite hike right in Aspen. The trail climbs above town, with views across Aspen and toward the surrounding mountains.

Travelers ready for a more challenging hike can head to American Lake or Cathedral Lake. Both trails climb through forests and aspen groves before reaching high-alpine lakes surrounded by rugged peaks.

For experienced hikers with a full day to spare, the Snowmass Lake Trail heads deep into the Maroon Bells–Snowmass Wilderness. It’s a much bigger undertaking, but the payoff is a mountain lake surrounded by some of Colorado’s most dramatic backcountry scenery.

There’s also one particularly memorable way to arrive in Aspen on foot. The Crested Butte-to-Aspen hike crosses West Maroon Pass, connecting two of Colorado’s best-known mountain towns along a high-alpine trail.

Take the Long Way Around

You don’t have to hike for miles to see the landscape changing.

Independence Pass is one of the classic drives from Aspen, climbing to more than 12,000 feet as it crosses the Continental Divide. Pullouts and trailheads along the way make it easy to turn the drive into a half-day outing.

For something quieter, follow Castle Creek Road toward Ashcroft, a former silver-mining town tucked into the mountains about 11 miles from Aspen. The road passes through thick stands of aspens, making the drive increasingly colorful as September progresses.

Another option is to head downvalley toward Redstone and Marble, following the Crystal River through a string of small mountain communities. Continue over McClure Pass and the landscape eventually opens toward Colorado’s North Fork Valley and the town of Paonia.

Summer Isn’t Finished Yet

One of the advantages of visiting this early in the season is that you don’t have to choose between a summer trip and a fall one.

Bike or e-bike toward the Maroon Bells, or follow the Rio Grande Trail from Aspen toward Woody Creek. Spend the morning fly fishing on the Roaring Fork or Fryingpan rivers, or trade the pavement for a guided 4×4 trip into the surrounding backcountry.

There’s still time to get on the water, too. At Kodiak Lake in the Roaring Fork Valley, visitors can paddleboard, water ski, wakeboard, wake surf or try wake foiling, with mountains surrounding the lake.

It’s a weekend when you might spend the morning hiking to an alpine lake, the afternoon on the water and the evening listening to live music under the Colorado sky.

Where to Stay While You’re There

Labor Day in Aspen comes at an interesting crossroads. Summer adventures are still going strong, fall is beginning to make its way into the mountains, and for one long weekend, some of the biggest names in music are playing beneath the peaks.

It doesn’t last long, and that is why you should go, while it lasts.
